Lumbia Elementary School Banduria Group Shines in Primavera Event

Talent is God-given and these kids sure have it.

With persistence, enthusiasm and passion, the group of pupils from Lumbia Elementary School take pride in their gift in playing banduria, a plucked chordophone primarily known to be the instrument of the Philippine folkloric songs.

Two years ago, when Ms. Vilma Larede, one of Lumbia Elementary School’s talented and supportive teachers, saw the students’ interest and ability to learn how to play banduria, she founded the group which is now known as the Lumbia Elementary School Rondalla.

“I am not only passionate about teaching these children, I’m also very honored to give them more of what I think I can impart to them—strengthen their talents and mold them into better individuals as they grow up,” Larede expressed.

The banduria players, some of whom came from Xavier Ecoville Resettlement Site after Typhoon Sendong hit their respective homes last 2010, continue to hone their talents in playing the instrument, while more kids from the school convey their interest in joining the group. However, lack of funds to buy more instruments for training is still the biggest hurdle that stands between them and their goals.

“The kids have grown to be passionate with their music. In fact, lack of funds doesn’t stop them from doing what they love to do. Their passion inspired teachers and parents to actively reach out to the public to solicit funds for the kids’ instruments,” Joy Talirongan, Lumbia Elementary School Principal, said.

One of the teachers, Mrs. Ramos, helped in soliciting funds for the group. Currently, four instruments came from Mrs. Ramos’ efforts and two more came from the Pedro Calungsod Foundation. The purchase of six additional banduria were made possible by the donations coming from kind-hearted, generous individuals. To date, the group is still accepting banduria donations for their ever-growing pool of talents.

“I am really happy that Ms. Jane Duterte of Primavera Residences appreciated these kids’ passion to play banduria,” Talirongan expressed.

Last September 26, 2014, as Primavera Residences celebrated the Topping Off ceremony of its second tower, the Rondalla of Lumbia Elementary School conducted their first ever out-of–school performance in the event attended by huge names from different industries in the Philippines and abroad.

“It was an experience I will never forget and these kids will treasure it the most. I do hope they [kids] have inspired many to appreciate the beauty of Filipino folk music,” Larede expressed.

Primavera Residences first came across the delightful group during their performance at the launch of the school-based feeding program where Primavera was one of the sponsors.

“Seeing these kids and hearing them play is indeed very inspiring. Despite the challenges they are facing, they continue to embrace their music with such passion. For that we’re very happy to have them in our event, and we hope to see more of them in future activities,” says Jane Duterte, PR and Marketing Manager of Primavera Residences.

Primavera Joins CDO Rugby’s 1st Anniv Celebration

Primavera Residences’ partner sports team, the Cagayan de Oro Rugby Football Club, has launched a series of events this September to celebrate their first anniversary. The first activity in the line up is aimed at giving back to the community with a fun party organized for the children of BoysTown. BoysTown in Lumbia, Cagayan de Oro houses young males which include orphans, street children, abandoned children, and other less fortunate young boys.

The half-day event catered to 25 children aged 5 to 17 and includes a wide array of activities such as a rugby sports therapy, games, a Jollibee-hosted party, and gift-giving from various sponsors. It was held on September 13, Saturday, from 8am to 12 noon at Primavera Residences Multipurpose Hall.

The CDO Rugby Club has chosen Boystown as the recipient for some of its community outreach projects since young boys are vulnerable to illegal drugs and other dangers,” says Mae Dizon, one of the event organizers. “This is the fourth time that CDO Rugby Club hosted an event for the BoysTown kids, but to make this one special, we opted to have the event outside their facility.”

Various sponsors presented donations to the children including dental and hygiene kits from Primavera Residences. Italpinas CEO Architect Romolo Nati was also present during the event to join the fun and games. Volunteer group Child Protection Brigade headed by founder Renato “Rhaine” Pepito is among the partners of this worthwhile activity.

Primavera Residences Launches First Ever ‘Fiesta Sa Primavera’ Grand Bazaar

bazaar1

Last August 16, 2014, Primavera Residences’ ground floor was crowded with revellers of the festival-themed “Fiesta sa Primavera Grand Bazaar” just in time for the Higalaay Festival.

The bazaar ran from 2PM to 9PM and Primavera Residences invited different local goods owners to showcase their products. Though challenged with a sudden downpour during the bazaar festivities, local shoppers and business owners proceeded with business as usual and did not let the heavy rain dampen their spirits.

Among the local businesses present in the bazaar were the following:

  1. Julia’s Closet. Julia’s Closet started as an online shop that caters to what every woman wants: accessories and clothes.
  2. CDO Rugby Football Club. The first and only rugby club in CDO sold football equipments, rugby t-shirts and Higala-ay shirts.
  3. Dire Husi. Dire Husi is a community of self-reliant and socially responsible young people collectively reaching their full potential through social entrepreneurship, arts and music. Their representatives sold intricately designed and handcrafted items such as dream catchers, accessories,  wine bottles, and pens to name a few.
  4. Figure It Up sold varied collection of dresses and accessories that would totally suit this generation’s fashion
  5. Anjo’s Diner, where your favorite sandwiches are given a surprising twist and stuffed with generous servings of beef, chicken, ham – or whatever it is you’re craving for.
  6. Gulp Juicery, sold healthy juices and salads aimed at cleansing toxic substances in our body.
  7. Joy’s Boutique Shop, sold designer bags that were a big hit during the bazaar. The bags on display included items from Louis Vuitton, Zara, Gucci, Guess, Michael Kors, among others.

Other independent sellers displayed various dry goods and food items. Smart Communications was also present during the bazaar to display their products and services.

The Fiesta sa Primavera Grand Bazaar was the best way to create camaraderie between the unit owners and the neighboring areas. Sometimes, all we need is to go the extra mile in reaching out to our community and help exhibit our local entrepreneurs.

Simple Ways to Celebrate Earth Day Everyday

April 22 is Earth Day, and this year’s theme is “ “Earth Day Everyday, Everywhere, for Everyone”. How exactly can we do that in our own little ways?

See our tips below.

We can never be too grateful for whatever nature has to offer us – from the food that we eat to what we wear to the things that we use and the buildings we are in. The earth is so bountiful it can give us anything we need for survival. So, we celebrate Earth Day every April 22 to recognize the bounties of nature and to always remind ourselves that we must play a big part in keeping our earth a healthy place to live in.

Have you been doing your share in nurturing your environment? I bet you have, and I’d also like to share a few simple eco-friendly tips you might like to try.

1. Recycle Office Supplies

Papers, notebooks, and boxes in your office are very useful recyclable materials. Call yourself a hoarder, but keeping scratches of papers, empty boxes and used notebooks can go a long way in saving trees from being cut down. Save blank back portions of scratch papers for printing documents or you can cut them to post-it or notepad sizes for scribbling. Empty boxes can be used for stocking paper files. Smaller cartons can be used for gift packing.

In Japan, many offices already follow the paperless policy where documents are disseminated over the internet or saved in flash drives. Well, if we can’t attain a paperless workplace for now, maybe we’ll have to go with recycling first.

2. Grow Your Own Garden

Try gardening as a hobby and you will probably appreciate the dirt works after seeing your plants grow or grasses grow green and thick on your front lawn. Try planting small trees on the corner lot or at your backyard. Trees provide good supply of oxygen and shade during hot weather. Grow some flower-bearing plants on your front lawn. If you have a bigger lot space, try growing fruit trees. Just learn tips in nurturing them from the internet.

3. Segregate Waste Properly

Here is a very simple yet ironically difficult tip to follow – separating waste accordingly. We have been used to throwing all kinds of trash in a single trash bin, but we don’t realize that by doing so, we make it difficult to help in recycling these garbage. Segregating them properly according to biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste makes it easier to identify which to recycle and reuse.

If you want to try more eco-friendly tips and share them with family or friends, visit and follow the official Primavera Residences Facebook page. The page  regularly posts tips that are very doable and easy to follow. You can try them in your own homes. Your own little ways in saving the earth can go a long way in keeping Mother Earth a better place to live in.

Here are some tips from the Primavera Residences Facebook page.

Primavera Residences Invites you to Join Earth Hour 2014

On the last Saturday of March every year, 7,000 cities and 152 countries switch off their lights for one hour in the biggest movement for the planet in the entire history of mankind.

We call this Earth Hour and it closely coincides with the equinox to make sure that the earth is blanketed in total darkness. More than just a symbolic action of turning off the lights for one full hour, Earth Hour is a movement that aims to inspire individuals and organizations to take action in helping create a better future for the planet.

Earth Hour started seven years ago and the Philippines has been participating since 2008. In Cagayan de Oro, the first city-wide Earth Hour event was observed in 2009 with spectacular performances followed by the symbolic switching off of lights at Divisoria, Cagayan de Oro City.

How can you participate this year?

There are different ways to participate, but first and foremost is to switch off the lights in your home and office from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm on Saturday, March 29.

Here are other ways to support Earth Hour.

  1. Spread the word and be an Earth Hour advocate. Tell your friends, family, colleagues, and everyone you know to switch off. You can do this through your social media accounts. In Facebook, there is an app called City Switch Off that you can use to invite your friends.
  2. Join the Earth Hour celebration at SM City CDO. Fanfare, performances, and loads of fun and entertainment await you at SM City Cagayan de Oro. Bring your friends and family and join the countdown to 8:30 PM!

In uptown Cagayan de Oro, Primavera Residences, the multi-awarded green property in Mindanao will take part in Earth Hour 2014. You too can do your share and be a superhero for the planet, just like this year’s Earth Hour ambassador Spider-Man. But remember to do your part and make a difference not only for that one hour, but beyond Earth Hour as well.
